Group Dynamics Development

Group dynamics is a system of behaviors and psychological processes occurring within a social group (inter group dynamics), or between social groups (inter group dynamics). The study of group dynamics can be useful in understanding decision-making behavior, tracking the spread of diseases in society, creating effective therapy techniques, and following the emergence and popularity of new ideas and technologies.[1] Group dynamics are at the core of understanding racism, sexism, and other forms of social prejudice and discrimination. These applications of the field are studied in psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science, epidemiology, education, social work, business, and communication studies.

There are three main things that can affect a team's cohesion (the act of working together well). They are: environmental factors, personal factors and leadership factors.

• Forming : This stage is usually characterized by some confusion and uncertainty. The major goals of the group have not been established.
• Storming : In this stage, the group is likely to see the highest level of disagreement and conflict. Members often challenge group goals and struggle for power.
• Norming : This stage is characterized by the recognition of individual differences and shared expectations.
• Performing : Performing, occurs when the group has matured and attains a feeling of cohesiveness. During this stage of development, individuals accept one another and conflict is resolved through group discussion.
